There are a bunch of cool software for terrain generation and they keep getting better. I’ll be focusing on software that is mostly using height maps and procedurals. I’ve mentioned some in previous posts. I’ve been a user of World Machine for several years, and I’ve interfaced it with Vue and Maya.
A third party add-on to World Machine is Quadspinner’s GeoGlyph.
Houdini has been building a great modeling tool set with procedural techniques.
World Creator is another program that is growing from World Machine’s tool set.
This sector is rapidly growing and getting more sophisticated. I’ll be going over this workflow in these software over the coming weeks. Each program has it’s plus and minus to it. When you add in using satellite imagery and DEM data from sources like the National Maps or Terrain.Party there is an infinite array of possibilities of worlds to create.
